Plan a trip to one of these destinations that may not be on the radars of most people but are by no means any less spectacular.

1. Gold Coast, Australia

The charismatic city of Gold Coast, situated on the southeastern coastline of Australia, is one that’s synonymous with sun and fun. Besides its long sandy beaches and epic surf breaks, this is also theme park central: Dreamworld, Warner Bros. Movie World, Wet’n’Wild, and more await those who love thrilling rides. Apart from exhilarating coasters, there are also family-friendly rides which the young ones will love. Need a respite from the adrenaline rush? Head inland, and explore Lamington National Park, which is home to ancient rainforests as well as the Albert’s lyrebird – this songbird is extremely rare, and only 3,500 are known to exist on earth.

2. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Most people think about Bangkok when Thailand is mentioned, but 700km away from the capital is a city nestled in the mountainous regions of the north that’s well-loved for its misty mountains, colourful hill tribes, delightful cuisine, and more: Chiang Mai. Wander around town, and you’ll find an Old City, where remnants of walls and moats that were built over 700 years ago can still be found. This is also where you’ll find many elaborate Buddhist temples. The most impressive of them all is Wat Chedi Luang, a 14th-century temple with a massive Lanna-style pagoda, that’s surrounded by intricately carved serpents.

3. Athens, Greece

History buffs should plan to visit Athens, which is one of the world’s oldest cities. This ancient metropolis is filled with many landmarks and ruins, but if there’s one to visit, it would be the magnificent Acropolis – the famed hilltop citadel that towers above the rest of the city from a rocky crag some 150 metres high. This is where you can take in the breathtaking colonnaded Parthenon temple, which was built during the height of the ancient Greek empire. Plan your trip between May to October, and be a part of the annual Athens Festival that lists its primary venue as The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, which is a stunning open-air Roman theatre that seats up to 4,700 people.

4. Cebu, Philippines

Cebu may not be on many people’s lists, but it’s definitely a destination that you should visit if you love frolicking in crystal clear waters. This tropical city is encircled by 150 islands, so those who love watersports such as kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling will find this a paradise. Besides visiting the picturesque islets, make time to explore the beautiful waterfalls. The one that’s most famous is Kawasan Falls – here, you’ll find three tiers of falls, all of which feature natural pools to swim in, while surrounded by lush jungle foliage and steep limestone canyon walls. And yes, the water is really that blue!
